The city shuttered an East Village cupcake bakery yesterday -- not for unsanitary conditions, but because two tables out front constituted an illegal sidewalk cafe.
Pam Nelson, owner of Butter Lane on East Seventh Street, said the three-day closure will cost her as much as $15,000 in business.
"When people see the sign, they assume there are rats in our cellar and we are being closed by the Department of Health," Nelson said. "This really hurts."
