Using a piping bag equipped with a medium round tip (I used an Ateco #12) and filled with my frosting I pipped a half inch mound onto each cupcake. Then I began crafting my 'brain'. I started by piping a D-shaped outline on each side of the frosting mound and then filling the empty space with swirly brain-like frosting coils.

That is it! Brain cupcakes.
These were soooo yummy. Swiss meringue butter cream has to be my favorite frosting (it will kill you, but it is just so yummy without being too sweet) and it compliments the bittersweet ganache very well. These are best kept at room temperature and eaten the same day.

Brain Cupcakes
Indulge your zombie sweet tooth with braaaaaaaaaaaains on cupcakes.

Brain Food via boingboing (Brains have never looked so yummy! Red velvet raspberry cake with French vanilla cream cheese frosting and a chocolate brain by Pamela. She made these using miniature brain molds. I love the drops of blood, gives it that fresh-out-of-the-skull look—mmmmmm.)

What she used for fake blood:

I used a caramel sauce tinted with a bit of gel burgundy and red. The golden-brown and slight opacity of the caramel helped keep the "blood" from looking too transparent and pinkish. I may add a wee bit of chocolate to it next time to increase this effect.

To decorate
1. Fit a piping bag with a plain 8mm nozzle and fill bag with brain shaded buttercream.
2. Visually divide the cupcake in two to represent each hemisphere of the brain and pipe squiggly lines on top. You can’t really go wrong as the brain matter squiggles go in all sorts of directions. Fill in any gaps with a dot of buttercream.

Directions
1.Prepare chocolate cupcakes according to recipe. Cool completely.
2.While cupcakes are cooling, make buttercream.
3.To decorate, use a medium round tip (such as Ateco #12) to pipe a mound of buttercream in the center of cupcake, then outline and pipe a brain design over it.

I opted to make the brain slugs themselves from gum paste, with royal icing eyes, and flower stamen antennae that I attempted to dye green with food coloring (and very vaguely succeeded in doing so). They are vanilla cupcakes from scratch, with some slightly grenadine flavored buttercream icing brains.
And they were as tasty as the sweet, sweet fluids the brain slugs crave themselves!

The slugs are made of gumpaste and royal icing, which are both edible. However, they are not necessarily the tastiest substances on earth.
However, both of them hold up very well over time , are easy to remove from the cake, and are really pretty durable when dry (unlike fondant). Just make sure to keep it dry and to remove any icing, which could make it gummy.
Then, you have yourself a little brain slug keepsake sugar sculpture to sit on your shelf!
Another edible alternative if you wanted to make these yourself would be marzipan. Which I didn't do because the birthday boy doesn't like it.
And the antennae... are not edible. : (

you could perhaps make edible antennae by making a hot thick sugary mix of some sort(maybe add gelatin to make it goopy like snot:D )and then tease it out into drips before hitting them with a blowdrier to 'freeze' them, so the set as elongated drips which you reverse and poke into your cupcake slugs head.
